Important update for Oracle Java SE 8 or 11 users

Java is widely installed as enabling software ('middleware') required to run Java-based applications.

Why should I not install or use Oracle Java SE 8 or 11?

We are aware of Oracle claiming that even a single Oracle Java SE installation without a confirmed licence could now trigger an annual charge based on organisational FTE (estimated at £1.2m for Oxford). The University does not wish to face such a claim, so must confirm the licence arrangement for all Oracle Java SE installations, and remove Oracle Java SE where it is not required or move to an alternative.

The University must be able to show that all Oracle Java SE 8 and 11 use across the collegiate University is appropriately licensed.

My laptop/desktop is managed by the University

If you are using a device managed by your local IT Support staff (ITSS) or IT Services they will coordinate this and you need take no independent action.

I manage my own device

You should not download, install or use Oracle Java SE 8 or 11 on a University device or if using your own device and working on University business or using it with University systems. This applies whether you are a member of staff, student, researcher or contractor.  The only exceptions to this are listed below but you can ONLY use Java with the specified application:

  1. You are a member of staff with exclusive use of your device and you are named on the University’s Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and/or PeopleXD licence allocations
  2. Your device or you are explicitly licensed via a qualifying product such as Oracle SQL Developer
  3. Java SE 8 or 11 has been supplied, installed and used exclusively as an integral component of a product supplied by an independent software vendor (ISV) and you have obtained written evidence of an Oracle Binary Licence and Redistribution Agreement (BLRA) from the ISV covering your use
  4. Where your use is for development and falls under the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Licence

If you manage your own device, do not fall into one of the four categories above, and you have Oracle Java SE 8 or 11 installed, you need to remove it or find an alternative Java implementation to allow you to carry out the tasks they are currently enabling you to do.

How do I check if I have Oracle Java SE 8 or 11 installed?

See the IT Help website for instruction on how to find out if you have Oracle Java SE installed and how to remove it, and what actions you need to take.

If you need further assistance, contact your local ITSS (if in an academic department or a college) or the central Service Desk.
