To respond to the increased level of interest in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, we are offering a free online session for all Oxford University staff looking at how these tools can be used in practice.
The focus of the session is to look at how ChatGPT can be used for very practical legitimate purposes.

What this is about
This is a practical session exploring the possibilities of using ChatGPT and similar products as real tools for teaching and learning. We will cover how you can use these tools to:
- Help you plan your teaching
- Produce teaching materials
- Improve your reading and writing processes
- Support students in developing their reading and writing skills
- Support your technical skills in other areas.
We will explore a number of practical case studies from several disciplines:
- Preparing materials for language teaching
- Designing a structured curriculum in psychology
- Supporting academic reading in the sciences
- Developing interactive web pages
- Increasing student fluency in academic writing
- Converting unstructured data into tables and vice versa.
What you will learn
This session will introduce key background information you need to make good decisions about when it may be appropriate to integrate these tools. It will then focus on key skills necessary to make the most of them.
You will be able to:
- Place ChatGPT in the context of developments in AI
- Describe how ChatGPT was developed and how the underlying technologies limit what can do
- Use understanding of the technology to write good prompts
- Choose appropriate method of iterating on the outputs produced
- Choose alternative tools to ChatGPT as appropriate.

Before the session, you should create an account on ChatGPT and try it out.
