Fri 24 Feb & Thu 23 Mar, 12.30-2pm
Online via Teams
Centre for Teaching and Learning
To respond to the increased level of interest in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, we are offering a free online session for all Oxford University staff looking at how these tools can be used in practice.
The focus of the session is to look at how ChatGPT can be used for very practical legitimate purposes.
This is a practical session exploring the possibilities of using ChatGPT and similar products as real tools for teaching and learning. We will cover how you can use these tools to:
Help you plan your teaching
Produce teaching materials
Improve your reading and writing processes
Support students in developing their reading and writing skills
Support your technical skills in other areas.
We will explore a number of practical case studies from several disciplines:
Preparing materials for language teaching
Designing a structured curriculum in psychology
Supporting academic reading in the sciences
Developing interactive web pages
Increasing student fluency in academic writing
Converting unstructured data into tables and vice versa.
What you will learn
This session will introduce key background information you need to make good decisions about when it may be appropriate to integrate these tools. It will then focus on key skills necessary to make the most of them.
You will be able to:
Place ChatGPT in the context of developments in AI
Describe how ChatGPT was developed and how the underlying technologies limit what can do
Use understanding of the technology to write good prompts
Choose appropriate method of iterating on the outputs produced
Choose alternative tools to ChatGPT as appropriate.
Preparation
Before the session, you should create an account on ChatGPT and try it out.
